The Town of Sevastopol is located in central Door County, Wisconsin.  The town hall is located at 4528 State Highway 57 (Institute), Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235.  The City of Sturgeon Bay and Town of Sturgeon Bay are at ts southern boundary (County T) and the Towns of Jacksonport and Egg Harbor to the north (Town Line Road). Our eastern boundary is beautiful Lake Michigan and on the west the peaceful Bay of Green Bay. We have a mixture of family farm operations, rural residential, undeveloped natural areas, and State and County parks. Our nearly 50 square miles is home to approximately 2,680 year-around residents--plus a substantial number of seasonals, and more than 80 local business offerings.

How did we get our Name??

When the Town founders met and petitioned for a town to the Door County Board in November 1859, they requested the new town be named “Lauriesville” in honor of the Laurie brothers who were leading businessmen in lumber, fishing, stone, etc.    They were granted their petition but at the first election of the town, the name of Lauriesville was rejected.  Peter Joseph Simon, who had taken a deep interest in the Crimean (Cremean) war which had ended a few years earlier, suggested Sevastopol.  Some records indicate the Germans on the eastern part of town were not consulted on the Lauriesville naming.  So Sebastopol (apparently b is written as a v in Russian) in southern Russia was the seat of the war in 1855—it took nearly a year for the French and English to capture during the Crimean War.  Simon and his group felt it quite honorable that the little Russian seaport had such fortitude to fend off the British and the French for such a  long time.  They had the majority and on March 17, 1860 Door County recorded the official name change from “Lauriesville” to “Sevastopol.”  There is some confusion as to whether it should have been a “b” or a “v.”  There is city and town of Sebastopol in California---with some similarities to us--as in dairy and fruit crops.

And a little more about our Town........

Most of our food establishments, pubs, businesses and lodging providers are open year-around.  You're invited to visit any time of year.  If you become really passionate about Sevastopol, it is a great place to live and the Sevastopol School District is committed to high education standards, "Pioneering the Next Generation."

If you are wondering about the origin of  "Sevastopol," it is the namesake of a feisty Southern Russian port on the Black Sea, originally "Sebastopol" which in 1855 withstood and was victorious in a tussle with the British and French.  Through a slip of the pen, "v" was substituted for the "b."

At this site, you will find our Town Board and Committee members, "go to" information, agenda for Board and Committee meetings, approved minutes,  budget info, facilities rental and other useful information.  The website is updated regularly, as information and forms develop.
